Hiking in the Japanese Alps
In medieval times there was a footpath know as the Nakesendo Way, which crossed over the Japanese Alps on its way between Kyoto and Tokyo.

Magome, Japan
Two post towns, Tsumago and Magome, and the path between the two, have been beautifully restored and can be walked in about 3 hours. The path is well marked, and reasonably easy. I suggest starting at Magome so that you walk more down hill than up!
Magome has a number of shops, restaurants and cafes, and street-food vendors, so you can power-up before you head off.

A traditional Irori in use
Along the way, as well as beautiful alpine views, and sections of original cobblestone path you will pass a lovely traditional tea house and a couple of beautiful waterfalls. The teahouse boils water on an irori ( a traditional open fire) and offers free tea to all walkers (please make a donation) and also has toilets.
The waterfalls are known as Odakimedaki Falls; Odaki Falls (on the left) is said to be male, and Medaki falls is said to be female. In the novel 'Musashi Miyamoto' by Eiji Yoshikawa it is here that Musashi and Otsu fell in love.
Finally, after walking through the most beautiful alpine scenery, you will descend into a wide valley and follow the river down into Tsumago. Here you will find refreshments of all types, the bus and coach stops and the JR train station.
Tsumago and Magome are about 3 hours from Kyoto by public transport. If you would like to visit either or both towns (or even to do the hike between the two) as part of your visit to Japan for a Reiki Retreat please let me know and I can help you find public transport and somewhere to stay.
